Huddersfield Town Ladies produced a fantastic performance to beat Blackpool Wren Rovers 10-1 in the determining round of the FA Women’s Premier League Cup.

Town were knocked out at the first hurdle by Newcastle United a year ago, but they have started this season strongly.

Blackpool were no match, and Town manager Glenn Preston said: “We want to challenge the best.”

Emily Heckler grabbed four goals and Debs Hastings hit a hat trick, with Katie Lockwood (2) and Katie Barnes also on the scoresheet.

Heckler now has 11 for the season.

Town had a string of chances before the breakthrough came in the 19th minute.

Sarah Dobby had a mazy run to the edge of the box and Hastings headed home.

Four minutes later Town made it two as Mallin crossed to Heckler, who volleyed in.

Hastings then headed against the underside of the bar (it looked to have crossed the line, but without Hawkeye, Blackpool escaped).

The goals were soon flowing, however, and Town were 7-0 up at half-time.

Hastings headed in from another Mallin cross, then Heckler latched onto a wonderful ball from midfield to slot her second.

Mallin claimed three further assists as Lockwood placed the ball past the keeper before Heckler headed, then volleyed home.

Blackpool, to their credit, improved in the second half.

It wasn’t until the 61st minute that Town scored again as Hastings ran through the centre of the Blackpool defence to notch at the second attempt after her first shot was parried.

Lockwood got her second of the afternoon as she was played through by Stephanie Smith.

After Hastings was fouled in the area, Lockwood could have completed a hat trick with the penalty, but her shot was saved.

Town finally made it to double figures four minutes from time as Hastings ghosted past her opponent and slipped the ball under the keeper. As it trickled towards the goal, substitute Barnes made sure, recording her first Town goal in the process.

The visitors claimed a consolation as Gemma Hatson curled a free-kick around the Town wall.

Preston added: “It’s nice to have a game where we can relax.

“I always feel sorry for the opposition when they’re on the receiving end of that kid of scoreline, and we have had those in the past.

“We set the target of not conceding and if we did, it needed to be something special.

“It was a good free-kick and there’s not a lot you can do about those.”

Skipper Mallin said: “I thought we played really well, and in the first half, we were brilliant.”

Town have an FAWPL Northern Division game at Stoke City on Sunday (2.00).
