TOWN striking legend Andy Booth is confident England can book their place in the World Cup knockout stages with victory over Slovenia.

The former England under-21 international admitted Fabio Capello’s side faced a tough test – but felt the fact they could face a rapid return home if they fail will be focusing the national side’s minds.

“It is pretty much a straight knockout now and the game will be very much like a cup final for England,” said Booth.

“It is certainly their biggest test since Fabio Capello took over, but I am confident that the players will be up for it – and I am confident that they can get the job done.”

After draws with USA, 1-1, and Algeria, 0-0, in their opening two Group C games, England face Slovenia knowing that a win in Port Elizabeth is their only guarantee of a place in the last 16.

Booth believes the side is due a good performance after the disappointment of their last two outings.

“It wouldn’t be England if we didn’t do it the hard way,” said Booth.

“But obviously as an England supporter I am backing them to put in the performance they need.

“It is going to be difficult after the first two games were sadly lacking what was required, but with a couple of player changes I can see them producing better – they need to or they could be back home by Friday!

“While you could hand Algeria some credit for the way they played last Friday, England were poor and it is hard to see them not performing better.

“But the players now have a focus and I am still confident that we will progress in the World Cup.”
