Huddersfield Town are hoping to nail down a pre-season friendly with Liverpool at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Nothing has been agreed as yet, but it’s hoped a suitable date for both clubs can be found.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Town head coach David Wagner , of course, are close friends and, if the match can be set up, it would be a real feature ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.

The problem is trying to slot it into a busy schedule for both clubs.

Wagner has promised Town an intense pre-season schedule which includes a ‘squad bonding’ camp in Sweden and then a more football-orientated trip to Austria, possibly including a couple of matches.

Hovering over Klopp’s plans for pre-season are the Euros with so many Liverpool players likely to arrive back late after involvement in the championships (England are due to announce their squad on Monday).

Klopp said: “It’s triple training sessions, of course.

“I’m really looking forward to pre-season. The problem with pre-season is that for the first three weeks we have 15 players who will have been away at the European Championship and we also have to see how the squad is changing.

“On another planet we would have six weeks together where we train because in this league it is the only time when you can only train.

“In all of the (pre-season) games we will play we will play out full training.

“So if we play our best in pre-season then I’ve done something completely wrong. It’s another session, it’s not about beating our opponents.

“I don’t care about how big the opponent is, we will say nothing about the situation.”

Liverpool are touring America but are set to play a number of games in the UK as well, including possibly Town and Tranmere, but nothing is set in stone.

Liverpool still hold the crowd record at the stadium, their 1999 visit in the FA Cup drawing a gate of 23,678.
