Chris Powell has revealed his excitement at linking up with his former Charlton Athletic prodigy Diego Poyet once more at Huddersfield Town after snapping up the West Ham United midfielder on an initial one-month loan.

Poyet joined the club late on Friday afternoon and was immediately thrust into the first-team squad for the trip to Fulham, but was not handed a Terriers debut despite being amongst the substitutes.

The Town boss admitted the Craven Cottage encounter had perhaps come too soon but is looking forward to bedding in a player he has kept a close eye on into his squad during the two-week international hiatus.

"I have kept my eye on Diego, obviously I know him well from Charlton,” Powell said.

"We only met him at 6.30pm on Friday night down here in the hotel so he wasn’t involved in any of the preparation going into the game so it was about him being involved in the squad today (Saturday).

"Now we have time to get him used to being with us over the international break, used to training and the area and hopefully we will see a player who will add quality to us, who is very composed on the ball.

"He will make us a better team for sure."

The Hammers loanee made his first Premier League start for Sam Allardyce's men at Manchester United earlier this season and Powell has not ruled out the possibility of extending the loan of a player he believes has pedigree.

"I gave him his debut in the cup at the turn of the year, and within six months he was Player of the Year at Charlton and then got his move to West Ham," the manager added.

"There is a quality player there and it is really good for us that West Ham have allowed him to come to us for an initial 28 days, and we will see from there.

"The busy December and Christmas period is coming up where you can’t bring players in so it is important to get the squad right."
