ANTHONY PILKINGTON has been Town’s most impressive player in the first half of the season.
Pilkington polled 45.2% of the votes for ‘player of the season so far’, edging out skipper Peter Clarke (17.9%) and injured midfielder Damien Johnson (14.5%).
The 22-year-old wideman Pilkington, who has 11 goals to his name as Lee Clark’s side have established themselves at the top end of the League I table, was also on target in the team display which was voted the best to date.
That was the 2-0 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in November, when Celtic loan man Graham Carey gave Town the lead before Pilkington found the net in spectacular style.
Of the fans who voted, 43.6% of them felt the display at Hillsborough was Town’s most complete, with the 2-0 home defeat of Southampton in October second (15.2%) and the opening-day 3-0 demolition of Notts County at Meadow Lane third (10.8%).
While Town are third in the table as they head to Arsenal for Sunday’s plum FA Cup fourth round tie at the Emirates (noon), a massive 76.6% of supporters who took part in the poll expect boss Clark to improve team performances in the second half of the season.
Bearing in mind most of the voting took place before 16-goal leading marksman Jordan Rhodes suffered his ankle injury, central defence was the position most fans felt Town needed to strengthen in the January transfer window (which closes on Monday).
A total of 49.8% were cast in favour of the centre-back positions, while just 20.8% made their first choice arrival a striker. The full-back positions polled 13.7% and central midfield 12.5%.
Following on from that, the players Town’s public would most like to see brought in to the club on a permanent basis – in an ideal world, of course – are Kevin Phillips, Bradley Wright-Phillips, Charlie Austin, Sean Morrison, Martin Kelly.
Not surprisingly, fans decided Town’s 4-1 defeat at Southampton was the worst performance of the season so far, with 28.8% of voters opting for the match at St Mary’s compared with 14% going for the 1-0 defeat at Oldham and 13% the 1-0 Galpharm defeat by Hartlepool.
The two players fans most want to see better form from are the internationals, striker Alan Lee and midfielder Joey Gudjonsson, but the majority of fans (59.3%) feel Town are in a better position on the whole than at this time last season and, while 57.8% are confident of achieving a second successive play-off campaign, 35% believe they will go up automatically.
Our rock skipper Peter Clarke proved to be popular with fans and 35% of those who took part in the mid-term survey believe he will lead Town to automatic promotion this term.
