Huddersfield Town midfield lynchpin Adam Clayton is being watched by Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka as the Spaniard ramps up his recruitment drive at the Riverside Stadium.

Clayton, who was named the club's 2013/2014 Player of the Season , has also caught the eye of relegated Premier League duo Cardiff City and Norwich City as both prepare for the Championship while Brighton and Hove Albion's £1m bid was knocked back in January.

According to Gazette Live, Karanka has been checking on Clayton after his instrumental role last season in helping Town avoid relegation and the Spaniard will continue to run the rule over the 25-year-old during the summer months as he considers his transfer targets.

Town's midfield orchestrator arrived two summers ago from arch rivals Leeds United but, with just 12 months remaining on his current deal, the club face a worrying couple of months ahead unless they can tie him to renewed terms.

One possible carrot to dangle in front of him is the captain's armband, with a successor to the departed Peter Clarke yet to be chosen and Clayton has already indicated he would be willing to step up if required .

Since his 2012 switch, Clayton has made 94 first-team outings for Town and has scored 12 goals, seven of which came last term.

He hit the headlines last season as much for the beard he grew for charity as his marvellous midfield displays, as he raised around £5,000 for the Huddersfield Town Foundation .
