Former Huddersfield Town player Matt Crooks is savouring his first Football League goal – and words of praise from his manager.

The versatile 21-year-old notched for Accrington Stanley in the final minute at Meadow Lane to seal a 1-1 League II draw with Notts County.

And boss John Coleman said: “I thought he had a smashing game. There are just a couple of things he could iron out, and he’d be a millionaire, because there are millionaires who haven’t got his talent or his physique.

“I’d like to see people like that get rewarded.”

Town academy product Crooks’ first career goal came in the Capital One Cup first-round tie against Hull City this month.

That game finished 2-2 after extra time, with Hull winning on penalties.

Crooks played just one first-team match for Town – the 4-0 home defeat by AFC Bournemouth on the opening day of last season.

He joined Accrington in February after a loan spell at the East Lancashire club.

Stanley, who have Town defender Joe Wright on loan and ex-Town striker Josh Windass on their books, are 13th in the table.

Leyton Orient lead the way after picking up a fourth win in as many matches, 3-2 at Newport County.

Ian Hendon’s side were among Town’s pre-season opponents, with Chris Powell’s side beating them 2-0 in Spain.
