TOWN once went top of the Championship by virtue of victory at Tranmere Rovers – but it was one of only three in 21 visits.
Future Rovers player and current coach Wayne Allison (2) and Marcus Stewart got the goals in front of the Sky TV cameras in September 1998.
It was the fourth in a run of five straight wins for Peter Jackson’s side, who eventually finished 10th.
Town had previously won 3-0 at Prenton Park in the second round of the FA Cup in 1980-81, when Ian Robins (2) and Brian Stanton scored for Mick Buxton’s team.
Bobby Collins was the manager when Terry Gray and Alan Gowling secured Town’s first success at the venue, by a 2-1 margin in the original Division III (now League I) in 1974-75.
Both sides were relegated at the end of that season.
Last season’s 3-1 setback was Town’s 14th loss at the venue, the first of them coming on their first visit, in the third round of the 1967-68 FA Cup.
Tom Johnston’s Town side reached the semi-finals of the League Cup, but Frank Worthington’s goal couldn’t stave off a 2-1 Tranmere win.
