TOWN will take on Peterborough in the League I play-off final at Old Trafford on Sunday, May 29.

Darren Ferguson’s side booked a showpiece showdown against the Galpharm team by getting past MK Dons 2-0 in their semi-final second leg at London Road last night.

Goals by Grant McCann (11) and Craig Mackail-Smith (54) sealed a 4-3 aggregate win.

Town boss Lee Clark, who was a Sky TV guest at the tie, said: “It was going to be tough whoever we ended up playing, and we know the job is far from done, but we’ll be ready to give it out best.”

It will be the fourth meeting between the pair this season.

Peterborough won 4-2 at London Road in August before being beaten 3-2 in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie in West Yorkshire in October. The league return at the stadium in April ended 1-1.

Peterborough’s passage to the eagerly-awaited final came as Town semi-final star Antony Kay revealed planning to light up Manchester – after pulling the plug on his stag do!

Town’s play-off semi-final hero will marry partner Louise in Mauritius the week after the final is played.

He’d planned a traditional pre-wedding trip with mates to Magaluf, but had to cancel when Town missed out on automatic promotion.

“I was hoping to be able to celebrate us going up out in Majorca, but it didn’t quite work out,” said the 28-year-old, who returned to the starting side for the first time in 12 games for the semi first leg, and retained his place on Wednesday, when he notched the extra-time equaliser which led a 3-3 draw and penalties, then put away the decisive spot kick for a 4-2 shoot-out success.

“Now the aim is to win promotion at Old Trafford, and that would be the perfect build-up to the wedding.”

The couple have two daughters, six-year-old Ella and Libby, five, and a three-year-old son Arley, and their children will fly out to Mauritius along with family and friends.

But the former Barnsley and Tranmere player, who began the second leg at centre-back before moving up into midfield, won’t let his own big match distract from Town’s.

“It was a fantastic feeling to get through to the final, but we all realise there’s some hard work to be done between now and then,” he added.

“We’ve got a strong squad, and the manager isn’t afraid to change the side, as he showed by bringing me back in.

“We all realise that places are up for grabs for the final, and all of us want to be involved, so every training session between now and then is going to be important.”

Of his goals against Bournemouth, Kay said: “Gary Roberts put in a great corner, and I just tried to get a good connection.

“It was great to see the header fly in, and coming so soon after they had gone 3-2 up, it gave us a big lift and was a kick in the teeth for them.

“We went into the shoot-out knowing we had experienced players available to take our kicks and that Ian Bennett was likely to save at least one of the Bournemouth penalties, and for him to stop their second really put them under the cosh.

“When their third hit the bar, we knew we had a huge advantage, and I went up to take mine knowing we had two chances to win it.

“Alan Lee was due to take the fifth, but in the event he didn’t have to.

“I went for accuracy and power, and it was great to see the net bulge and the celebrations begin. Our supporters were fantastic, and the way they stuck with us even when we went behind really helped. We’ll take thousands to Old Trafford and we’ll be going all out to give them something to cheer.”
