HUDDERSFIELD Town are breathing a sigh of relief after being reassured by Jamaican football chiefs that a hand injury sustained by Jermaine Beckford in Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Panama is not serious.

The on-loan Leicester striker, who has only just returned from a torn hamstring, fractured a knuckle on his left hand when making his Reggae Boyz debut in the 1-1 draw in Kingston.

But he will be available for Theodore Whitmore’s side for tonight’s clash in Costa Rica, the third of 10 qualifiers, which is also likely to feature fellow Town loanee Theo Robinson.

The Derby striker who is in his second spell with Town won his second cap when he replaced Beckford 64 minutes into the Panama clash.

Now the pair, who are due back in Huddersfield on Thursday, aim to help Jamaica to a first victory in the final North America, Central America and Caribbean qualification phase.

The clash at the national stadium in the Costa Rican capital of San Jose kicks-off at 8.00pm local time, 2.00am tomorrow British.

Jamaica are fifth in the six-team group with two points from as many games, two points behind leaders Honduras.

The top three teams qualify directly for the finals in Brazil while the fourth-placed side will face a play-off against the winner of Oceania section.

Jamaica, who had a goalless draw in Mexico in their first game, when Robinson made his international debut, led through Bristol City’s Marvin Elliott against Panama.

But a lapse in concentration soon after Robinson replaced Beckford in the 64th minute allowed the visitors to level.

The Costa Ricans have asked FIFA for a replay of their 1-0 defeat by the USA in snowy Colorado on Friday.

They said the conditions threatened player safety, obliterated markings on the pitch and prevented the ball from rolling properly.

Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto urged the referee to abandon the game, but US coach Jurgen Klinsmann argued both teams faced the same conditions.

It was a far cry from Kingston, where there was bright sunshine at the national stadium the Jamaica fans nickname ‘The Office’.

Elliott’s 27th-minute headed opener had the home fans in party mood, but spirits were dampened when Luis Henriquez levelled, making it two draws apiece for both sides.

While Beckford is set to face Costa Rica with the help of a splint on his hand, Jamaica will be without Watford defender Nyron Nosworthy.

He is out for the rest of the season and will need surgery on an Achilles tendon injury picked up against Panama.

Coach Whitmore, the former Hull and Tranmere player, said: “What Nyron brought to the team was obvious.

“He was a really valuable member of the team and was important to our defensive strength.

“But we have a strong squad and I have good options for the next game.”
