Newcastle United are planning a special atmosphere for their first home game of the season - and Huddersfield Town will bear the brunt.

Supporters group Gallowgate Flags are urging Toon fans to get to the game half an hour before kick off to build the atmosphere and watch the unveiling of their banners.

The day is also being dubbed 'Black and White Day' in an attempt to get all the fans decked out in the monochromatic best.

And now manager Rafa Benitez has backed the cause.

The Spaniard hailed the initiative, calling it "fantastic" and agreeing it will be part of re-building the "special atmosphere" at St James' Park.

The appeal was started in order to raise money for United flags and £5,000 was quickly raised, with the cash going towards creating more than 500 banners for the weekend's fixture - which should break the Championship attendance record.

Benitez said: "The atmosphere that the fans create already is amazing, but for our fans to organise something like this shows the huge passion of the Geordies to support their team.

"I know it will make the noise and the atmosphere in St James’ Park even more special than usual, and that will be fantastic.

"I would like to thank everyone involved with this project on behalf of myself and the players. It is things like this that can really make the difference for us over a long and challenging season ahead."

Town fans at the Brentford match

Huddersfield Town had their own display of flags against Brentford last weekend, with supporters group North Stand Loyal retweeting this image after the match:

The Town team will have to come to terms with the noise in the North East quickly, and Terriers' fans will have to sing louder than ever to be heard over the Geordie crowd and urge their side to victory.
