LEE CLARK is backing Dean Heffernan to play a big role as Town chase a place in the League I play-offs.

The Australian international left-back will make his 11th Town appearance when promotion rivals Charlton Athletic come to Huddersfield on Saturday.

Heffernan had a tough time in Town’s last home game against leaders Norwich City, who ran out 3-1 winners.

But Clark, delighted by the defender’s input during last Saturday’s 2-0 win at Leyton Orient, is confident he learned a useful lesson.

"It’s been pretty full-on for Dean since he arrived here," said Clark of the twice-capped 29-year-old, who played for Central Coast Mariners in the Aussie top flight.

"But he’s settled into the town and the club, and I think he’s enjoying himself, which is important.

"Dean made a big contribution to what was a pleasing all-round team performance down at Orient, but now it’s all about Charlton."

The Londoners head North seeking a first win in three and with goalkeeper Rob Elliot and 13-goal top scorer Deon Burton both out injured.

Boss Phil Parkinson also has doubts over former Town striker Akpo Sodje, midfielder Lloyd Sam and Spanish defender Jose Semedo.

Fans of both clubs are awaiting news of any developments ahead of this afternoon’s 5.00pm deadline for loan signings.

Clark is aiming to bring in a striker and Charlton chief Parkinson a goalkeeper after Elliot was ruled out for a month, leaving Darren Randolph the only experienced stopper on the books.

Middlesex referee Jarnail Singh will take charge on Saturday. It’s his first Town game since last season’s 1-1 home draw with Oldham.
