The visit of Middlesbrough to the John Smith’s wasn’t a great contest, and Town looked short of ideas at times.
But when Jon Stead equalised for the Terriers in the 86th minute it looked like a share of the spoils would be taken.
Deep into injury time, however, Adam Reach made his way across the Town box and when Tommy Smith pulled his shirt – the Boro player hit the ground, and referee Kevin Wright had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and the kick was despatched by Grant Leadbitter to give the visitors the points.
Onto Tuesday and a much improved, more solid performance against our Roses rivals Wigan Athletic.
Powell will be happy that his new side have kept a clean sheet and that’s the first point on the board and something to build on.
Defensively, Town got stuck in and knocked the ball around well at times, especially when breaking forward from midfield, but there’s still plenty of work to be done and another striker will probably be on Powell’s wish list.
The introduction of Sean Scannell saw the tricky winger create some good openings down the right, and when his cross was fired into the box late on in the game, both Wells and Stead looked to get a touch to try and steer the ball into the net but Wigan keeper Carson dived to save.
All in all, this was a match to build on and we now look forward to the big West Yorkshire derby against Leeds at Elland Road this Saturday – come on Town!
