Huddersfield Town could have a fight on their hands if they want to bring back Reece James to fill their left-back vacancy.

It’s uncertain whether Manchester United will loan out the 21-year-old, who ended last season at the John Smith’s Stadium.

And if they do, there is likely to be a queue of clubs wanting to snap him up.

Town boss Chris Powell, who brought James in after QPR loanee Jack Robinson was sidelined by a knee injury, has no specialist left-back on the books.

The Bacup-born player, who has made one United appearance and has had loan stints at Carlisle United and Rotherham United, would fit the bill.

But it’s reported Watford, newly promoted to the Premier League, and Town’s Championship rivals Fulham and QPR are among the other clubs who are interested.

And it could be that United decide to keep James at Old Trafford, where he is contracted until next summer.

There are continuing worries over the fitness of big-money left-back Luke Shaw.

And manager Louis van Gaal and his right-hand man Ryan Giggs hold James in high esteem.

Van Gaal took James on United’s pre-season tour of the United States 12 months ago.

He was subsequently handed a first-team debut in the shock Capital One Cup second-round defeat to MK Dons in August.

United return to the States this pre-season, and van Gaal has pledged to give his young players a chance.

James played six times for Town and scored direct from a corner in the 4-4 home draw with Derby County.

Robinson’s injury is set to keep him out at relegated QPR until the New Year.
