Huddersfield Town are being linked with a move for Swindon Town right-back Nathan Byrne, but sources suggest a move for the 22-year-old is unlikely as manager Chris Powell looks to strengthen in other areas.

Powell is reportedly a huge fan of the Tottenham Hotspur trainee, who has been one of the key components in a Swindon side that missed out on promotion to the Championship with a 4-0 play-off final defeat against Preston North End at Wembley this weekend.

But his priorities in this transfer market lie elsewhere, with Town particularly keen to bring in a left-back following the end of Reece James' loan spell at the end of the 2014/15 campaign and the subsequent release of Jake Carroll.

The right flank is not believed to be in any need of attention following the outstanding form of Players' Player of the Year Sean Scannell and the progress shown by Tommy Smith behind him at right-back, with the latter extending his stay at Town to the summer of 2018 last month.

Robins sources had indicated that Town were monitoring Byrne's progress after an impressive season in League One, in which he finished with nine assists to finish as the second most-creative defender in the third tier after Bristol City's Joe Bryan (10).

Byrne, who was also named in the League One Team of the Year for 2014/15, was tied down for an additional year at the County Ground earlier this month but a number of Championship clubs are believed to be lining up moves for the former Spurs starlet.

Mauricio Pochettino's side are due 50 per cent of the funds from any sale and therefore Robins boss Mark Cooper, who looks resigned to losing midfield duo Massimo Luongo and Ben Gladwin, will be minded to put a sizeable price tag on one of his most prized assets.
