ANTONY KAY will be on familiar territory tonight – and would love another double in the latest Tranmere Rovers versus Town fixture.

The midfielder netted two in the Birkenhead side’s 3-1 home win over Lee Clark’s men last season, when Tranmere came within a whisker of the League I play-offs.

The boot is on the other foot now, with the former Barnsley man well established in Town’s engine room after his summer switch.

And Kay, 27, credits his transition from centre-back to midfielder to Ronnie Moore, his manager in two seasons at Prenton Park.

“I left Barnsley as a centre-back and in my first season at Tranmere I played in that position,” he explained.

“But in the second year I was moved into central midfield.

“I think Ronnie could see in training that I liked to get forward.

“When I was younger, I had always played in the centre of midfield at Barnsley, so it is not as if the role was completely new to me.

“I had a really good partnership going in Tranmere’s midfield with Steve Jennings and I have gone from strength to strength in that position.”

“I reckon it is my best position but if a manager ever wants me to play at centre-back I will be happy to do so.”

Kay has contributed five goals to Town’s cause this season, taking his total career haul to 36.

One of them was in the 3-3 home draw against Tranmere in December, when the Merseysiders three times fought back within minutes of going behind.

Ian Thomas-Moore responded to Lee Novak’s sixth-minute opener, Craig Curran netted after Michael Collins grabbed Town’s second on 58 minutes, then Kay’s 81st-minute effort was cancelled out by Michael Ricketts.
