DEFENDER Jack Hunt insisted after Huddersfield Town’s clinical win that a clean sheet means more to him than any plaudits for a greatindividual display.

Right-back Hunt, who has caught the eye in every game since starting at Port Vale in the League Cup, crossed for Alan Lee’s second goal in another top show.

But the youngster preferred to talk up the shut-out and how he is still trying to learn the game rather than take praise from fans and boss Lee Clark.

The Town chief said: “Jack has speed and agility. If we can improve his defending we’ll have a real player on our hands, perhaps in the Lee Peltier mould.

“Jack’s a great learner. He’s working hard on making himself a better defender and is improving week in, week out. His attitude is first class.”

That, and a cheeky remark from Gary Naysmith as he left the ground on Saturday about Hunt being England’s next right-back, left him a bit sheepish.

Hunt said: “I was very pleased with my performance. Everybody knows I love to get forward. But I know I’ve a lot of work to do on the defensive side of my game.

“I get asked all the time about whether I’m a winger or a defender. I definitely see myself as a defender and that’s the area where I’m looking to improve.”

He said a second clean sheet of the season was more was important than his own display and added: “We were disappointed with the goals we conceded at Cardiff.

“We may have been playing a team from a higher division in the Cup. But we should have seen the game out.

“We’ve looked back at the goals and then done a lot of defensive work in the week. The strikers have been doing their job and we have to do ours.

“So we were thrilled with the clean sheet.

“But we could’ve kept it tighter in the last 10 minutes. They had some chances and it’s something we’ll have to look at as we go forward.”

Hunt’s focus is now on tomorrow’s match at Northampton in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, a competition he wants the team to do well in.

“It’ll be my first taste of trophy action in a Town shirt,” he said. “I played for Chesterfield on loan last season and ended up cup-tied.

“We want to do well in it. Every player wants to play in a final at Wembley. You never know if you’ll get the chance later on, so we’d love to get there this time.”

The Huddersfield Town webchat won't take place on Monday due to it being a Bank Holiday. It will now take place on Wednesday, August 31 between 12.30pm and 1.30pm.
