HUDDERSFIELD Town defender Jamie McCombe will remain at Preston North End after the Lancashire club refused the mutual termination of his loan.
Town had recalled the rangy centre half yesterday and McCombe, 28, was already back when the news broke today that he would be heading back across the Pennines.
Huddersfield Town had not included a recall clause in the deal, which runs to January 2, which meant Preston would need to have agreed to ending the loan deal early.
They did not and McCombe, who turns 29 on New Year's Day, will now stay with Preston until the deal expires.
Huddersfield Town Chief Executive Nigel Clibbens said: "I spoke to Preston first thing this morning and in the absence of a call-back clause in our favour, I was told a mutual termination was not then possible from Preston's viewpoint.
"It is an unfortunate circumstance, but we can do nothing about it now.
"We look forward to Jamie's return in the New Year."
