The League I basement side were on top for long periods against the Shots, but couldn’t press home that advantage.
Caretaker boss Les Parry said: “We’re disappointed not to be through. We created some good chances, particularly in the first half and if we had taken any of them I’m sure we would have won very comfortably.
“It became a bit scrappy later on and we became a bit over-eager. We also allowed ourselves to become frustrated and our final ball was not good enough.
“But it’s not over yet and I’m sure we can make a bold fist of things in the replay. In the end I suppose I’ve got to be happy with a clean sheet, but not with the overall performance.”
Swindon followed up last Tuesday’s League I win over Town with a 1-0 second-round success at Wrexham.
Gordon Greer headed an 80th-minute winner against the Blue Square Premier side.

Michael Rankine and Richard Brodie, with a penalty, got the goals.
Forest Green are also through after a 2-1 win in their tie at Bath.

Another ex-Town loan man, striker Liam Dickinson, scored twice as Brighton beat Rushden 3-2 at Withdean.
Rotherham were held 2-1 by Luton at the Don Valley while Staines forced a replay at Millwall with a 1-1 draw.
But Lincoln ease through their tricky tie at Northwich, where Chris Fagan struck for the Imps before Jamie Clarke’s double.
