EDDIE NEWTON watched MK Dons trounce Town 3-1 – then backed Stan Ternent to be a success at the Galpharm!

Roberto Di Matteo’s right-hand man at MK has first-hand knowledge of Ternent’s methods, having been a player when he was a coach at Chelsea in the early Nineties.

“Stan has a huge amount of experience. He knows exactly what he’s doing and I’m sure he’ll get things right,” said Newton, a former Chelsea youth coach.

“He’s very thorough on the training ground, and he’ll keep working and working to perfect his systems and tactics.

“Huddersfield play a direct style of football, and on another day, this game could have gone a completely different way.

“We knew we’d come under pressure and the key for us was to ensure our defence stood up to the barrage, and other than conceding the late goal, they were excellent.

“It was also important that we won the second ball as well as the first, and in that respect, our midfielders were good too.

“We knew there would be a good chance of counter attacking, and that’s how it turned out.”

MK’s second, scored by newly-recruited ex-Chesterfield midfielder Peter Leven, followed a break of five against one.

“It was something to behold,” added Newton.

“It’s not often you see so many attackers against one defender!”

Newton was also delighted with the debut display of French midfielder Flavien Belson, brought in on a season-long loan from FC Metz, the club who produced Robert Pires and Emmanuel Adebayor.

“He gets the ball down and plays football, but he also competes very well,” explained Newton.

“We were a bit worried that the change of pace would catch him out. We tried to get it into his head that our game is far more in your face than the French league, where it’s a lot more patient, and he seemed to take it on board.”
