STAN TERNENT will be taking a close look at young keepers Simon Eastwood and Alex Smithies between now and the League I opener at home to Stockport on August 9.

The Galpharm boss is delighted to have retained Matt Glennon, who signed a new two-year deal in May.

But he admits to knowing little about England age-group internationals Eastwood, 19, and Smithies, who is a year younger.

They are the only other keepers on the books, but Ternent won’t rush into signing more experienced cover.

“What is certain is that we have two excellent prospects on the books, which is a fortunate position to be in,” said the manager.

“But Simon has never played in the first team while Alex has just a game and a half under his belt, so in that sense they are unproven.

“It’s fair to say that you don’t know how they will react until they are thrown into a first-team situation.

“I rate Matt Glennon very highly and I’m more than happy to have him as my senior goalkeeper.

“I understand he’s played the bulk of the matches since he’s been at the club, but obviously there’s always a chance of injury or suspension.

“In that case you have to have someone ready to step in, and we’ll be assessing whether Simon and Alex are ready for that during pre-season.”

Glennon, whose consistency led to Paul Rachubka leaving for Blackpool the season before last, has made 101 Town appearances since signing from St Johnstone two summers ago. He has failed to finish only two of those games, one through injury the other for a sending-off.
