TOWN returned from one tour – and immediately announced details of another.

And after a leisurely trip to the Italian Riviera, manager Ian Greaves emphasised that in Germany and Holland, it would be work, work, work!

The trip to Italy, led by director J Bernard Newman, had been arranged as a reward for the players after their Second Division title triumph, and all 16 who had featured during the campaign soaked up the sun at Sanremo, on the Mediterranean coast in the North-West of the country.

Town, who had won the league by seven points from also-promoted Blackpool, played one final match, as friendly against Italian Third Division team Savona.

Trevor Cherry, Jimmy McGill and Frank Worthington, top scorer in 1969-70 with 19 goals in all competitions, were on target in a 3-0 win.

With Town due to kick-off their first top-flight campaign since 1955-56 the following August 15, it was announced that a home friendly against Sheffield Wednesday, just relegated to Division II, would be followed by games against Borussia Dortmund and AZAlkmaar.

And Greaves, who had tuned his side up for the successful 69-70 season with games against Dutch teams DWSAmsterdam, Vitesse Arnhem and Haarlem, explained: “As much as anything, our trip to Italy was a well-deserved holiday after a long and arduous season.

“But our next tour will be a very different proposition. It will be very much a working trip, and we will up against two top-quality sides.”

While Greaves planned his next European trip, Manchester United and Derby County who would be among Town’s top-flight foes the following season, featured in the draw for the first Watney Cup pre-season tournament.

It was open to the two highest-scoring sides in each division who had not qualified for Europe or won promotion.

The four first-round ties were Reading v United, Fulham v Derby, Aldershot v Sheffield United and Peterborough v Hull.
