Chris Powell says he’s keen to give outings to his developing Huddersfield Town players before the end of the season.

But the boss has stressed timing is the key, both in terms of the team’s position in the Championship table and the personnel.

Monday’s 2-1 home win over Ipswich Town has provided an important points buffer between Powell’s 17th-placed side and the bottom three.

But the manager insists there will be no let-up as he prepares for tough away games at Nottingham Forest on Saturday and Brighton next Tuesday.

After that Town have home meetings with Derby County and Blackburn Rovers before a final-day trip to already-relegated Blackpool on May 2.

Powell has recently handed debuts to 19-year-olds Jake Charles and William Boyle, who has since joined Conference club Kidderminster Harriers on loan.

And his squad against Ipswich included keeper Lloyd Allinson, 21, and midfielder Duane Holmes, 20, who scored the winner as the Development team beat Crewe Alexandra 2-1 on Tuesday.

Holmes made his only senior Town appearance this season in the 2-0 home Capital One Cup second-round defeat by Forest in August.

Midfielder Phil Billing, 18, and defenders Joe Wilkinson, 19, and Joe Wright, 20, have also been on the bench under Powell.

All these players have featured in Frankie Bunn’s Town Under 21 side, who have won five on the trot in the Professional Development League.

The timing has to be right

“I have thoughts on giving some of the younger players a chance, to let them experience a first-team match,” said Powell.

“But you always have to be sure the timing is right, both in terms of the team and the players themselves.”

Saturday’s hosts, who are ninth, gave a cameo appearance to 18-year-old striker Tyler Walker, the son of former Forest and a England defender Des, in Monday’s 2-2 draw at Brentford.

Walker notched his first senior goal and his manager Dougie Freedman said: “He is an exciting prospect and I believe he can play for the club for a very long time.

“Tyler has huge potential and is a credit to the academy. All I am going to do is polish him up and try to put the final touches.”

Town’s on-loan Forest midfielder Radi Majewski is ineligible for the trip to the City Ground, where Freedman’s side have won five of their last six games.

Powell is hoping striker Ishmael Miller beats the back injury which kept him out against Ipswich in time to be involved against his old club.

Centre-back Joel Lynch is also an ex-Forest player.
