UPPERMILL are the 2008 Hoyle Cup winners after a grim Galpharm night.

The Division I side captured the Works League’s knockout trophy but only after a dour struggle against the Division II leaders Bay Athletic.

In the end, neither side were able to end the stalemate and the match went to penalties after a 0-0 draw after extra-time.

Uppermill kept their nerve to take the trophy 4-2.

Both sides lacked composure in a game in which there was little football on show.

This was not a game for the purist – all too often the ball was up in the air or play was littered with errors and bereft of flowing moves.

Uppermill had a slight edge in the first half but Dale Garbutt and Michael Bainbridge both missed good opportunities.

Bay did come near a goal when a Graham McLachlan header was cleared off the line by Rob Squibbs but that was as close as it came.

The second half saw Bay looking the slightly livelier side but again there were few chances. Uppermill defender Keith Prior headed against his own bar as Bay applied the pressure and at the other end, Bay goalkeeper Chris Hickman saved well from substitute Dave Taylor as the inevitable extra-time loomed.

The final 30 minutes saw more half-chances but again neither side could break the deadlock, although Uppermill’s Matt Harrop deserved more after a fine dipping shot.
