Huddersfield Town’s Under 21 side played superbly to knock holders Southampton out of the Premier League Cup at St Mary’s on Monday night.

A goal by Jack Senior after 23 minutes – lashed into the roof of the net from eight yards – and a close-range header from Danny Kane just after the hour put Frankie Bunn’s side into the last eight with a 2-0 win.

The second goal came from an outstanding move and a brilliant chipped pass from the raiding Senior, sealing a last-eight place for the second successive season for Town.

Town had defeated Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough at the John Smith’s Stadium in the earlier Cup rounds, but this was a tremendous result against a Saints side who knocked out Chelsea in the last round.

Southampton have a Category 1 Academy within the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP), meaning their Under 21 side play regular league fixtures in the Barclays Under 21 Premier League Division 1.

Town entered the competition at the Qualifying Round 2 stage due to the Academy’s Category 2 status.

As in the PDL2, teams can play a maximum of three overage outfields and an overage goalkeeper.
