NATHAN CLARKE will be back in a re-built Town defence against Luton which could include a new loan signing.

Manager Peter Jackson was in contact today with a Premiership club about a player he first targeted three weeks ago.

Jackson is determined to ring the changes after the 4-3 defeat at Walsall in which Town twice failed to defend a two-goal lead after first-half strikes by Andy Booth and Luke Beckett (2).

Clarke is at the forefront of planning after recovering from a groin injury which has kept him out of two games and Jackson confirmed he'll swing the axe.

"We could be in the bottom six rather than the top six if we don't sort things out," he said today.

"I'm really frustrated because we look like we're going to have to score six goals just to win a game and that's not on.

"Going forward we are really good, but defensive lapses are letting us down the whole time and the `goals against' column is just killing us.

"For a side that wants to press for the play-offs, we are leaking too many goals and it's just not acceptable.

"Maybe I'll have to leave some people out and give the kids a try, and I'll also continue trying to bring someone else in."

Jackson would not reveal his target, but added: "I hope to know in the next day or so whether we can get a loan deal done."

Town are 14th, nine points off the play-off zone and 12 above the bottom four, and Beckett has netted four in three games.

"Luke has done fantastically well for us and proved an excellent signing, but we are not backing that up with the correct sort of defensive work and it's bitterly disappointing," added Jackson.

"Luton is now a very big game for us and it's important we improve. We just have to get a run together and we have to start as soon as we possibly can."
