He speaks three languages and understands two more.

But new Huddersfield Town centre-back Jon Gorenc Stankovic wants to let his feet - and head - do the talking!

The 6ft 3in Slovenian who has joined from David Wagner’s former club Borussia Dortmund on a four-year deal (Town have the option of adding 12 more months) is eager to tackle the Championship.

And the £600,000 buy reckons his previous experience of playing under Town’s German head coach will be valuable.

“He’s the reason I came here, of course,” said the 20-year-old, who has twice been named in the full Slovenia squad but has yet to make his debut for the national team.

Wagner took Stankovic, who has played for his country from Under 16 right through to Under 21 level, to Dortmund from Slovenian side Domzale in 2014.

“I enjoyed his coaching and I feel I benefitted from it,” added the player.

“When I learned he had joined Huddersfield, I did wonder about the possibility of me also coming to England at some stage.

“I have enjoyed my football in Germany, and Dortmund are a great club.

“But I grew up watching English football back in Slovenia, so to have the chance to come here is great.”

As well as his mother tongue, Stankovic speaks German and English as well as a smattering of Serbian and Croatian.

And having moved to Dortmund from the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, he says relocating to England has been relatively simple.

“Everyone at the club has made it easy for me,” said the man who started his career as a midfielder but will compete with Town-record £1.8m signing Christopher Schindler, Michael Hefele and skipper Mark Hudson for a central defensive berth in a 4-2-3-1 system he is more than familiar with.

“I moved to defence when I joined Dortmund, and I feel happy playing in this position within the full-throttle system.

“When all the players know their roles, it is very effective, and I believe it can take this club up a level.

“I want to move up a level as a player, and I think I can do that here.

“There is good competition, and that is necessary if you are to improve as individuals as well as a team.

“I am prepared to do everything I can to play well for this club, and I am excited to be here.”
