Jonathan Hogg is ready to be a driving force as Huddersfield Town aim to kick-off a new year with victory for the first time since Doncaster Rovers were beaten 3-1 at home in 2004.

The John Smith’s Stadium side started 2015, 2014 and 2013 with defeats against Reading (1-0 at home in the FA Cup), Burnley (3-2 at Turf Moor) and Leicester City (6-1 in the East Midlands) respectively.

Despite being bottom of the Championship table, midfielder Hogg believes Bolton will prove tough opponents.

But he says 19th-placed Town have what it takes to seal a second win in three games and make it seven points from nine under head coach David Wagner.

“He has made a lot of changes, but they are positive ones and they are starting to take effect,” said the former Watford player.

“We are all getting fitter and getting used to what is a enjoyable system to play.

“From my point of view, it’s different to what I was doing previously.

“Having been a box-to-box man, I am now playing more of a sitting role, trying to start our attacks and stop the opposition from mounting their own.

“It’s all about reading the game, getting into the right areas and covering other players.

“You have to be disciplined, but it’s enjoyable to be able to get on the ball and try to drive us up the pitch.”

Hogg says he is doing special work with the physio staff to try to avoid any further hip problems.

He has featured in only 13 of Town’s 25 games this time around.

“I thought I started okay and got half a dozen or so games under my belt,” he added.

“However, I have had a few injury problems since, and I am doing whatever I can to strengthen my hip area.

“My fitness levels aren’t a problem, so hopefully I can continue to make myself available.”
