Golcar United 5
Hepworth United 5
(Under 11 Cup semi-final aet – Golcar won 4-3 on pens)
GOLCAR’S Robbie Turner finally brought this semi-final marathon to an end when he fired in the winning goal from the penalty spot.
The tie began over a week ago as the first game was sadly ended during the second half when, with the score at 1-1, the match had to be abandoned due to an injury to a Hepworth player.
The replay turned out to be a thriller.
Golcar got off to a flying start with a goal from Callum Denton, but a Josh Sedgewick equaliser left the game on a knife edge until the same player looked to have won the game for Hepworth with a second goal ten minutes from time.
With just minutes remaining Elliot Thomas drilled home a Golcar equaliser to send the game into extra time and Hepworth’s hopes took a major blow when Denton and Theo Morris scored to give Golcar a clear lead.
But, having come so close to winning, Hepworth were not about to give up and hopes were raised again when Daniel Lockwood scored to reduce the deficit at the end of the first period of extra time.
Yet again Golcar seemed to have victory in their hands when Denton completed a hat trick to restore his sides two-goal advantage, but the game still held another twist.
Even when Henry Stewart pulled another back for Hepworth it seemed unlikely Golcar would relinquish their lead again but, with the clock ticking, Josh Nichols stepped in to level the scores at 5-5 and force the game to be settled from the penalty spot.
A brilliant Brandon Morrison save tilted the shoot-out in Golcar’s favour and, with both sides missing one each and the score at 3-3, Golcar had the chance to finally settle the matter with one more kick.
Robbie Turner held his nerve and Golcar could, at last, start the celebrations to end a fascinating game which could easily have gone either way.
