THE Huddersfield FA Under 17 Minor team travelled to Selby Town for their first West Riding Minor Cup game of the season and the journey proved worthwhile as they beat Barkston Ash FA 4-2.

Huddersfield are in a group of just four teams this season, with the top two progressing to the semi-finals.

Despite enjoying the bulk of possession, Luke Walker and Sylbert Stewart were able to test the Barkston Ash keeper, Declan Flowers, only from distance.

Against the run of play, Barkston Ash took the lead in 28th minute when Jackson Walker challenged Huddersfield keeper Alex Briggs for a cross from the right. As the ball broke loose, Walker scored from close range.

But the visitors were level two minutes before the break when Nawfal Mohammed used his trickery and, after being brought down inside the box, he got up and confidently stroked the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 1-1.

Huddersfield almost took the lead a minute later when midfielder Brandon Smith tried his luck from distance, but keeper Flowers touched it onto the bar and over for a corner.

It wasn’t long into the second period before Huddersfield began to exert their authority on the game.

Smith and midfield partner Jordan Townend took control while at the heart of the defence, Oliver Scott and Eddie Heald were giving nothing away.

Huddersfield finally took the lead in the 66th minute with a well-worked goal. Left-back Connor Tuff, who had been supporting Mohammed well down the left, played a quick one-two which allowed the latter to square the ball for Walker to score from six yards.

Mohammed almost made it three when a Smith free-kick found him eight yards out, but his volley from a narrow angle was well saved.

For the second time, Barkston scored against the run of play when Jackson Walker notched his second to level at 2-2.

Despite this setback, Huddersfield continued to play the better football as their opponents weakened.

Two goals eventually came in the last 10 minutes and both from striker Stewart.

The first was when he coolly flicked over the keeper following a pass from Joe Fox and, finally, when he rammed home from six yards to clinch a solid victory.
