SHELLEY COLLEGE Under 16 girls football team have been crowned West Yorkshire County Cup champions.

Full-back Hannah Stead scored the winning goal with 10 minutes remaining to defeat a strong Heckmondwike team at the home of Ossett Albion Football Club.

Stead stroked the ball home after a shot by striker Katie Clarkson was fumbled to give the jubilant youngsters the trophy.

The girls had been convincing in the earlier rounds scoring double figures and only conceding one goal.

Shelley started the game well with Cerys Diveney-Clegg and Olivia Hirst linking well withwingers Lauren Pritchard and Paige Taylor-Sykes.

Heckmondwike responded with a couple of attacks but the Shelley defence stood strong with captain Georgia Tyreman and Hannah Robinson excelling at the back.

The second half was a close encounter, Shelley dominated possession but Heckmondwike were resilient in defence as the scoreline remained stalemate.

However, with the clock ticking down, Shelley took the lead.

Player of the match Diveney-Clegg, won the ball in midfield and released Clarkson towards goal with an accurate pass and Clarkson’s shot was not dealt with by the Heckmondwike goalkeeper and Stead slotted the ball into the corner of the net to seal a well-deserved hard fought victory.
