HONLEY’S hopes of adding the RCD Under 11 Cup to the Huddersfield FA Minor Cup which they won last month were ended by Howden Clough in a penalty shoot-out.
Unbeaten Clough triumphed 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw and extra time.
With 26 consecutive league and cup victories under their belt, Clough were clear favourites but Honley were in determined mood as Cameron Sharp, George Brook, Thomas Yarwood and Sam Ridsdale took control.
Clough’s reputation was such that, even when Connor Mahoney gave Honley the lead after 20 minutes, there was still an air of expectancy that Clough would soon to get into the game.
But Honley continued to dominate and only their failure to clear a corner allowed Clough back into the game when Jonny Hill struck from close range to level the tie at 1-1.
Nathan Beaumont deservedly restored Honley’s advantage shortly after the break as Honley continued to outplay their opponents but, with just five minutes separating Honley from a famous cup victory, Josh Teale stroked home a second equaliser for Clough to send the game into extra time.
With no further score, the game had to be settled from the penalty spot where, again, Honley gained the initiative thanks to two Clough misses.
But the Holme Valley side were unable to hold onto their advantage and Clough ran out winners to finish their season with a glorious league and cup double.
