WITH only a handful of games played since the middle of November, many teams were itching to get back into the action.

But, despite a partial thaw and some early-morning sunshine, many teams still have to go another week without a game as pitches suffered from either frost or waterlogging.

One team to enjoy playing was YMCA Under 11s, who secured their first points of the season over Clifton Rangers.

Callum Crossland and Owen Murthy scored for the Brighouse side to ensure a close finish but replies from Lewis Fitzpatrick, Toby Womersley and Jack Brewster gave YMCA a morale-boosting three points and new hope for survival in Division I.

In Division 4A of the Under 11s, Meltham held on to third place in the league with a solid victory over fourth-placed Hepworth Utd.

United were unable to find the net as Meltham’s Ethan Denniss (2), Tyreke Dewar-Moodie, Ronan Greenwood and Callum McDonald secured a 5-0 win.

Westend Tigers Under 12s finally got to play a game after an eight-week break but it was Brighouse who started the brighter in their Division 4B encounter, when Joseph Furness opened the scoring for the home side.

Westend came back strongly to take the lead with goals from Peter Moran (2) and one each from Tom Scholefield and Michael Smith, but the home team never gave up and a hat trick from Jamie Smythe sealed a 4-4 draw.

Dalton Dynamoes travelled to Warrenside for their Under 15 Division II meeting with Yorkshire Lions but, despite scoring four times, the Dynamoes travelled home on the end of a heavy defeat.

Kristian Wood grabbed two goals as Dalton tried hard to stay in the game but, although Bradley Flanaghan and an own goal added to their tally, they were unable to deny the Lions as strikes from Luke Robinson (2), Aaron Sutcliffe (2), Saul Britton, Ashley Hyde, Maddem Comrie, Jordan Lewis and four from Lewis Antwi secured the three points to keep the Lions in the promotion hunt.

In the Under 17 age group, a resurgent AFC Emley propelled themselves into third place in the Second Division with a solid win over Northowram.

Taylor-Oldfield and Norcliffe were on target for the visitors but replies from Robert Whetham (2), Oliver Ghee, Daniel Pitt, Joshua Senior and Chris Coles ensured three points for Emley.

The West Riding County Cups have not been immune from the bad weather and yet another set of postponements will leave many teams frustrated.

One local side to get a game was Lepton Highlanders, who travelled to Temple Newsam, Leeds, where they enjoyed a thrilling third-round game against Colton.

The Highlanders showed tremendous character by twice coming back from a two-goal deficit.

Having recovered from early setbacks the Huddersfield side rallied to 3-3 and force the game into extra-time.

Despite clawing their way back, they were unlucky not to win but chances for Dan Hopley and Callum Scott went agonisingly wide of the target and with the score locked at 5-5, the game had to be settled from the penalty spot.

Both keepers made a save apiece to keep each team’s hopes alive but Lepton were cruelly denied a place in the last 16 when the home keeper saved Lepton’s fifth attempt to give Colton a 5-4 win on penalties, and they will take their place among teams aiming for the quarter-finals.
