KIRKBURTON missed out on a place in the last four of the Sheffield Junior Cup when they were beaten 3-1 by Pontefract-based Kinsley Boys.

Lee Bradley created an early chance for Burton when he turned the defender in the penalty area but his shot was cleared.

Kinsley won a free-kick three yards in from the touchline but the shot whistled past Nick Wright's post.

Kinsley had another chance soon afterwards but Wright saved down to his right.

On 20 minutes Kirkburton started to pile on the pressure and Parker was just inches from connecting with a cross which screamed across the face of goal before Bradley forced another save from the keeper.

Then, from the first corner of the match, Burton's pressure paid off when Kinsley defender Folletti headed past his own keeper to give Burton a 1-0 lead at the break.

A large crowd had gathered to support the home side and confidence was high that Burton could topple the defending Junior Cup champions.

But Kinsley returned for the second half with renewed vigour and got their reward after a great solo effort from striker Mark Wright who ran across the edge of the box leaving Burton's defence on their backsides before slotting into the bottom corner.

Kirkburton had a chance at the other end when Parker's shot looked destined for the top corner but the Kinsley keeper pulled off a great save and soon after Tom Kemp screwed a shot narrowly past a post.

Steve Chandler got booked for a reckless challenge and from 30-yards out the ball was floated in and Wright came to punch but missed, and the ball dropped to Folletti who made amends for his earlier own goal by firing Kinsley into a 2-1 lead from close range.

Burton then suddenly seemed to lose all enthusiasm for the game, conceding soft possession with passes going astray.

And with 15 minutes remaining Kinsley's best player Wright was awarded a penalty after Damian Ives had a hack at him in the area (Ives was lucky to stay on the field but the excellent referee Kevin Barraclough showed him only yellow) and Wilson wrapped up Kinsley's 3-1 victory.

* Defending West Riding County Amateur League champions Bay Athletic slipped to only a third Premier Division defeat in 15 games when a Mick Palethorpe second-half strike gave Ovenden a 1-0 win.

The result pushed Bay to third with Ovenden moving up to second behind leaders Brighouse Town.

Several games in the County Amateur League were postponed due to waterlogged pitches.

But in Division I, Marsden beat Steeton 3-1 with goals from Paul Storer, Neil Wood and Darren Smith, while goals from Danny McGuire (2) and Liam Madison, gave Golcar United Reserves a 3-1 win against Hunsworth.
