HONLEY needed extra-time but still booked a place in the second round of the West Riding Challenge Trophy with a 4-2 victory against Beeston St Anthonys.

In an entertaining end-to-end game at Neiley playing fields the visitors were well organised and took a deserved lead from the penalty spot after a mistimed tackle from Stu Rowling.

But Honley stepped up a gear and equalised through Terry Howe before the break.

Honley dominated the second half and eventually took the lead when Chris MacNamara steered the ball into the top corner after a goalmouth melee.

But in the closing minutes a Beeston forward reached a long clearance ahead of the onrushing keeper Rowbottom to head into the empty net. Honley found a new lease of life in extra-time and within minutes Nicky Lee was pulled down in the box and Danny Knutton slotted home the penalty.

As Beeston looked for another equaliser they left gaps at the back and a superb pass by Sean Clegg found Lee who outpaced the Beeston defence to steer the ball home and wrap up the tie for the home side.

Nathan Folan and Andrew McClellan scored the goals to send Paddock Rangers into the second round of the trophy.

Paddock maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-0 victory against Bingley Town.

Paddock started strongly while Beeston were grateful to their goalkeeper.

But it wasn’t long until the deadlock was broken when Pell beat the offside trap, rounded the keeper before squaring for Folan to slot home from close range.

It was much the same in the second half and it wasn’t long before McClellan finished the game off when he fired home after fine work from Chris Wilkins.

Bingley rarely threatened the Paddock back four who were superbly marshalled by John Davies and, in the end, only poor finishing kept the score to two.

In the District League Division IV Flockton went top after a 4-1 win against Cartworth Moor.

The strong wind made playing conditions difficult but Flockton were first on the scoresheet on 10 minutes when a good Richard Coates run down the right found Nathan Appleyard who scored from close range.

Cartworth had the opportunity to equalise on the half hour when they were awarded a penalty after hand ball by Andy Cooke but Malcolm Lockwood’s spot kick was well saved by Mark Bentley.

Flockton played up the slope with the wind in the second half and soon extended their lead.

Appleyard was brought down by Adam Brooksbank and he converted the penalty.

Cartworth continued to play good football but they were unable to convert at least three good chances.

Flockton increased their lead on 60 minutes with a good header from Mark Moorhouse who scored from a Craig Smith corner.

Cartworth again pressed forward and were rewarded with an Adam Lindley goal 10 minutes from the end, but Appleyard put the final nail in the coffin with a 40-yard wind assisted goal to complete his hat trick. It was a good game played by two sides who tried to pass it in very trying conditions and, also, there was no back-biting or usual comments to the stand-in referee.
