TOWN Ladies’ hopes of springing a shock in the Sheffield FA Women’s Challenge Cup quarter-finals were extinguished by Doncaster Rovers Belles.
The well-known National Premier League side from South Yorkshire ran out 7-1 winners in Thursday night’s tie.
Town were unbeaten in six beforehand, but came under pressure from the off, and were two down by the 17th minute.
The visitors were showing the Belles too much respect and striker Katie Barnes had a lone struggle up front.
A good attacking move put Barnes clean through on goal, but she was ruled offside, and Doncaster scored again on 35 and 38 minutes for a 4-0 half-time lead.
Town started the second half with more conviction and started to put the Belles under some pressure.
Barnes was quick to latch onto a loose ball and from a difficult angle just outside the area, she shot home.
But in the final 25 minutes, Doncaster’s power showed as they scored further goals after 75, 80 and 82 minutes.
Town are in North-East Regional League Premier Division action against Guiseley at Emley tomorrow (1.00).
