CLUBS in the Get Smart Group Kirklees Sunday League were stunned to hear of a defeat for Division I leaders Pak Rangers.

That was especially so as it came at the hands of lowly Helion Albion and by a 3-0 scoreline.

While Pak were missing three key defenders in Farouk Hussain, Aamer Hussain and Abdulla Aka, this should not detract from Helion’s superb achievement.

The game started at a quick tempo, as both sides moved the ball about well on a perfect pitch. Paul Pyke went close with a free kick for Pak, after Adam Walsh was tripped at the edge of the box.

The deadlock was almost broken when Helion’s Dave Atkinson found Mickey Hall with a pass that beat the offside trap.

Hall’s shot rebounded off the bar and landed at his feet, but he managed to blast wide at the second attempt.

Some solid defending by Gav Bell and Sean Dempsey at the heart of Helion’s defence kept Pak’s Liam Reilly and Brighton Mugadza at bay.

The opening goal came on 35 minutes from neat link-up play between Salm and Atkinson, who found Hall 12 yards out and, this time, he made no mistake with a low shot past Matt Mulvihill in the Pak goal.

Salm was replaced by Danny McGrath before – on 40 minutes – Pak were awarded a penalty for handball. Pyke stepped up, but his shot was well saved by Jeremy Travers.

Pak were on the front foot in the early stages of the second half, but it was Helion who almost extended their lead when James Whyte found McGrath, who beat two defenders before flicking the ball to Patrick Maylett, who somehow missed from 15 yards in front of goal.

Pak almost levelled it through Pyke, who saw his shot cleared off the line by Richard Fairbank, but then McGrath and Will Bedford went close to extending the Helion lead before Pak were reduced to 10 men when Adam Walsh was sent off for a second bookable offence.

On 62 minutes, following some good tackling from Michael Castle, Helion scored again with a strike from Maylett.

They got the third 10 minutes from time, following sustained pressure on the Pak goal, Maylett netting again with a 20-yard shot, after impressive work from Atkinson.

Fifth-place Dalton fought out a close match with basement side Marsh at Standiforth, with the home side coming out on top 6-4.

Jamie Hartley scored an eight-minute hat trick as Dalton raced into a three-goal lead.

Marsh rallied and pulled it back to 3-3, with two penalties from James Meadows and a goal from Richard Dyson.

In the second half, Dalton regained the lead through Ryan Haigh, before Marsh were awarded yet another penalty which Meadows converted to complete his hat trick.

With the game looking like it was going to end in a draw, Haigh scored his second of the game from close range after a well-worked Dalton corner.

Chris Milby finished it off with a neat finish from inside the area to secure the victory.

Inter Athletic closed the gap on fourth-place Wellington Westgate A to three points following a 10-3 victory.

Andrew Allison found the net four times, Ryan also claimed a hat trick, with Hargreaves, Conheeney and Henry adding their names to the scoresheet.

In Division II, leaders Queen had to work very hard to defeat Wellington B, before achieving a tight 2-1 win to maintain their 100% record.

First-half goals from Carl Sykes and Ryan John were enough to see off the struggling visitors.

Queen were forced to defend for the majority of the second half after a goal from Christie Regan for Wellington made for a nervous last 20 minutes, but Queen managed to hang on.

Queen defeated Wellington 16-2 in the previous encounter, but this time the goals were more hard to come by.

Wellington played some neat football at times but failed to create any clear-cut chances.

Third-placed Field Head closed the gap on second-placed Town Rangers to six points after beating their rivals 3-2.

Goalscorers for Field Head were Dan Wright, Luke Gilman and Jamie Metcalfe.
