Oldham Athletic-bound Anthony Gerrard says he is disappointed not to have had more of a chance at Huddersfield Town this season.

The out-of-favour 29-year-old’s loan move to the League I club effectively ends his time at the John Smith’s Stadium, because he is out of contract at the end of the season.

The former Cardiff City player, set to make his Latics debut at Crewe Alexandra tomorrow, has made only one start and three appearances from the bench for Town this time around.

Former Everton trainee Gerrard, who was signed from Cardiff in August 2012 and has made 91 Town appearances in all, said: “I couldn’t quite put it into context for paper talk how frustrating it has been.

“From being an ever-present for the last two seasons to being told I am not needed has been tough.

“I wouldn’t mind if the club were pulling up trees, but Huddersfield have one of the worst defensive records in the Championship, so not to be given a chance is a bitter pill to swallow.

“I am here to show everyone I am fit, and I have been ready to play for 16 or 17 weeks.

“Hopefully Oldham will be the beneficiaries.”

Gerrard, who has also played for Walsall and had loan spells at Accrington Stanley and Hull City, added: “I have something to prove to myself and to other people.

“It is different if you get the opportunity somewhere and you don’t take it. That is down to you.

“If you haven’t been given the opportunity then that is just narrow-mindedness and being too busy listening to other people’s opinions rather than making your own.

“That was the case at Huddersfield, but that has been and gone now and I am not going to be there next season.

“It is about my future now and I am playing for it, basically.

“I have come to Oldham to show people what I am capable of.”

The Boundary Park side, currently under the caretaker managership of Dean Holden, are 16th in League I.

They lost 3-1 at home to MK Dons on Tuesday. It was a sixth defeat in seven games.

The Latics have conceded eight goals in their last three outings.
