NINE Huddersfield District League clubs were involved in the third round of the West Riding County Challenge Trophy – and four progressed to the last 32.

Two others bowed out, but another three have still to play due to postponements.

Division II Kirkheaton Rovers, winners in the second round at Battyeford Airedale 6-4, had to travel again.

Their opponents were Wakefield League side AFC Alverthorpe and Rovers got off to a flying start with a goal after five minutes from Antonio Ianztio.

The 17-year-old had appeared for the first team as a substitute, but he was making his first start and his goal was a fine solo effort – beating his marker before cutting inside to score.

Despite this bright start to the game, the Rovers only led by this single goal at half-time.

However, as soon as the second went in, Alverthorpe’s heads dropped and Rovers ran out 4-0 winners.

The others on the scoresheet were former Town player Chris Billy, with two, and Darren Frost.

Ianztio is a former Kirkheaton Youth player and gradually more of the juniors are turning out with the Rovers.

Moldgreen had a tough encounter with Ovenden before running out 5-3 winners.

The Halifax side took the lead, but Moldgreen were soon level when David Todd headed the equaliser. Ashley Crowther then chipped the keeper to give Moldgreen a 2-1 lead at half time.

Within two minutes of the restart Ovenden scored twice, so Moldgreen had to come from behind again.

A fine solo goal from Curtis Roberts made it 3-3 with 20 minutes remaining.

Five minutes later John Paul Flynn put Moldgreen in front.

Moldgreen keeper Luke Haigh kept his side in front with a fine save and passage into the next round was sealed when Paul Stead scored from a corner.

Honley were 8-2 winners at Bradley with goals from Hirst (3), Martin (2), Vant (2) and Lee.

Division III Dalton Crusaders completed the successful quartet and they are beginning to build up a reputation as a ‘cup team’.

They have now won as many games in the West Riding Trophy as they have in their League matches.

Having disposed of Tyersal in the previous round, they were at home to Leeds side Red Star Harehills.

A goal after five minutes from Richard Lewis and another in the 30th minute by Simeon Douglas gave them a 2-0 half-time lead.

The visitors replied early in the second half, but James Whyte restored the two goal difference. When Red Star closed the gap again, the Crusaders were feeling a little edgy, but Whyte popped up again five minutes from time to seal a 4-2 victory.

The District League involvement with the West Riding County Challenge Cup evaporated with the demise of both Heywood Irish Centre and Lepton Highlanders. B

Both lost by the single goal with Heywoods beaten 2-1 at Overthorpe and the Highlanders went down 3-2 to Ossett Common after extra time.

The performance of the day in league action came from Division II side Scissett, who have not made the best of starts to the season for them.

Earlier this year, they led top-of-the-table Berry Brow 4-3 with just 11 minutes to go when a bad injury caused the abandonment of the game and the fixture had to be replayed.

Before last week’s game they had just a solitary point to their name, but they now have another after a 3-3 draw with third placed Lamb Inn.

Despite Michael Johnson’s goal in the first half, they trailed 3-1 at the break. Steve Dodson pulled one back and ten minutes from time Steve Beaumont fired in the equaliser.

The action wasn’t over as Scissett keeper Jonathan Hunt pulled off a double save to prevent Lamb Inn claiming all three points.
