ANY Town fan around in the early Seventies will recall the great FA Cup win over West Ham.

But what of Town's other knockout victory over a team in claret and blue during a campaign which brought the misery of relegation from the top flight but the excitement of a charge to the quarter finals of the world's top club cup competition?

The run which included a 4-2 Leeds Road victory over Bobby Moore and Co in round five began with a Roses battle at Burnley.

The third-round clash drew 21,563 to Turf Moor.

And it was settled by a goal from an unlikely source.

Right-back Dennis Clarke had been an FA Cup winner for former club West Brom, becoming the first substitute to appear at that stage when he came off the bench during the 1-0 Wembley victory over Manchester City in 1968.

But the tough tackler was hardly known as a scorer.

In fact he managed just four goals for his three clubs (after playing for West Brom from 1966 to January 1969, he was at Birmingham from September 1973 until 1975).

His header from Les Chapman's corner on January 15, 1972 came with only 13 minutes of a tight tie left.

Ian Greaves' Town might have been a division higher than the Clarets, who had been relegated the season before.

But the home side, bossed by Jimmy Adamson, had plenty of talented youngsters in their ranks, and could match most sides on their day.

Included in the team against Greaves's side, who were fighting a grim battle against the drop and hadn't won a match since November, were strikers Steve Kindon, later to play for Town, and Paul Fletcher, who became chief executive.

Among the players who had led Adamson to optmistically label Burnley "the team of the Seventies" were Dave Thomas, Colin Waldron, Martin Dobson and Leighton James.

For the first half hour, that tag looked a long way off the mark as Town stormed forward at will.

With Steve Smith and Terry Dolan putting down anchor in midfield, there were top chances for Frank Worthington, who looked on in anguish as goalkeeper Peter Mellor flopped on a powerful header just as it looked set to roll over the line, and Jimmy Lawson, whose nod from a Chapman cross was just off target.

But after weathering the storm, the home side hit back, and Fletcher and James both had chances blocked before Alan West fluffed a glorious opportunity when he shot straight at David Lawson from just six yards.

The game looked destined to be drawn until Clarke finally brought pleasure for the 5,000 travelling fans at a three-sided stadium (the ground was undergoing redevelopment).

Burnley tried their best to force a replay, but Town held firm, and came close to doubling their lead when Chapman crashed a shot against the woodwork in stoppage time.
