TOWN suffered McAlpine heartache when Efan Ekoku's late, late strike clinched a 2-2 draw for Wimbledon in the fifth round of the FA Cup
Two minutes and 37 seconds of added time had ticked away at the end of a gripping tie when Ekoku pulled the plug on a huge McAlpine celebration in front of 17,307 supporters.
Dejection replaced delirium and it was another blow to the heart strings when the unfashionable Premiership side won 3-1 in the Selhurst Park replay.
In the first tie, Town had led from the eighth minute after Rodney Rowe scored his first senior goal for the club in more than two years.
And a flying header from popular defender Tom Cowan, whose performance was described as "colossal", illuminated the opening minutes of the second half.
Ekoku restored the tie to knife-edge with a close-range header on 65 minutes - the first goal Town's resilient defence had conceded in 491 minutes.
And the Nigerian international's late steal proved a cruel finale for Brian Horton's side as the celebratory musical blasts emanated from visitors' dressing room.
