Supporters with long memories might recall Huddersfield Town being relegated alongside Nottingham Forest 43 years ago and Tuesday’s hosts Brighton 12 months later.

Ian Greaves’ side won only six of their 42 top-flight games in 1971-72.

One of those rare league victories came at Forest, who fell 2-1 to goals from Frank Worthington and Jimmy Lawson.

Forest, managed by Matt Gillies, managed eight victories, but in the days of two points for a win, still finished on the same 25-mark as Town, who were bottom on goal average. That left the pair four points behind Crystal Palace, who survived.

Derby won the title under future Forest manager Brian Clough while Norwich and Birmingham were promoted from Division II.

The following season, Forest, where Gillies was replaced by Dave Mackay, finished 14th.

Brighton, bossed by former Town player Pat Saward, were bottom on 29 points.

Town collected 33, the same as Cardiff, but went down on goal average as Bolton and Notts County came up from the Third Division.

Brighton did the double over Town winning 2-0 at Leeds Road and 2-1 at the Goldstone Ground, where Alan Gowling netted.

For Brighton, it was a quick return to Division III after their promotion with Aston Villa the season before.

But Town had never been outside the top two divisions since entering the Football League in 1910.

Worse was to follow as they were relegated to the basement section in 1975.
