LUCKLESS striker Junior Mendes today vowed to deliver the goals which will give battling Town an immediate Cup and League tonic.

Mendes hit a post as Town lost 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday, dropping to 18th in the Coca-Cola League I ahead of tomorrow's Carling Cup trip to Leeds United (7.45).

Outside the Premiership only Leeds played to a bigger crowd on Saturday - 26,264 saw Steve MacLean's winner for Wednesday while 31,808 watched Leeds draw 1-1 with Nottingham Forest - and 5,100 Town fans are due to make tomorrow's first-round derby pilgrimage.

Mendes can't wait for the tie despite his early-season failure to get off the mark.

"A goal would mean the world to me at the moment - it would mean everything - and if it comes tomorrow in what is a great game then so much the better," said the ex-Mansfield frontman.

"It's a massive, massive game for us and it's matches like this and the one at Sheffield Wednesday that I came to this club to be involved in.

"Obviously I'm disappointed not to have scored for the club so far, but I'm sure that if I can get one goal then plenty more will follow."

It's the first time since March last year, en route to relegation, that Town have failed to score in three successive matches.

It is only the second time it's happened under manager Peter Jackson, following defeats to Portsmouth and Port Vale at the end of the Great Escape season and a 1-0 reversal at Bury to kick off the next.

"All the lads are keen to get a Cup win under our belts because that would really kick-start our season," added Mendes.

"I don't think there is any need for panic because we are working hard, playing quite well and creating chances, it's just a matter of sticking a few in the back of the net and pushing on from there.

"I haven't scored yet but I'll keep getting in the right positions and, if I don't find the net, I'll do the next best thing and set stuff up for the other lads."

David Mirfin (jaw) is fit.
