EXPERIENCED Martin McIntosh will prove a priceless mentor to Town's young stars in their bid to reach the Championship.

That's the view of manager Peter Jackson, who will hand the 34-year-old a fourth pre-season appearance against Mansfield at Field Mill tonight (7.00).

"McIntosh is a quality player," said Jackson, who travels with his entire professional squad to tackle Carlton Palmer's League II side.

"He has played at a high level for most of his long career and that's bound to be a help to lads like David Mirfin, Nathan Clarke, Tom Clarke and John McCombe.

"I've no doubt McIntosh is going to be an excellent player for us."

Signed from Rotherham on a two-year contract, McIntosh has settled in quickly, playing in both matches in Ibiza and impressing in the 4-1 victory at Harrogate on Tuesday.

"He's a big, aggressive leader and that's probably something we needed at the back with so many youngsters in the squad," added Jackson.

"Tosh makes a very big impression and he will have a big influence over the next couple of years at this club."

Mansfield's squad has changed completely since Town's play-off final victory against them 14 months ago, but Jackson expects a tough encounter tonight.

"We played excellently against Coventry in Ibiza, but this will be our biggest test domestically so far and we're looking forward to it," added Jackson.

Prices are £10 adults, £7.50 seniors and £5 juniors.
