Royal Ascot is one of the iconic events of the English summer and it’s a privilege to be able to work there for five days because there is nothing else like it in the world.

While I am not a fan of wearing top hat and tails the whole time, it does add a certain ‘Britishness’ to an event which is unique and very special.

Ladies Day was Thursday but, to be honest, ladies visiting Royal Ascot make a wonderful effort on every day and always look absolutely fantastic.

When the sun shines, the whole occasion just couldn’t be better.

I have to say I haven’t backed a winner all week, but hopefully my luck will change before we head for home.

The banker on Saturday would have to be Telescope in the Hardwicke Stakes, defending his crown in the mile and a half Group Two, while the Diamond Jubilee Stakes looks really tough to predict.

Anyone looking for a big price should probably consider Moviesta, owned by Harry Redknapp and in the market at around 16/1.

Former QPR boss Harry Redknapp will be casting a keen eye on events at Ascot

He has been threatening to break through in the sprints and this could be a good opportunity.

If I get no luck with the horses, then maybe my fortunes will change in the US Open golf.

It is being played on a links-style course which, from all reports, is absolutely brutal and the winning score – according to commentators – could be a plus score.

I have backed a couple of players ahead of the start – both men who hit it straight and who have links form.

Justin Rose is in the form of his life and I fancy him to do well, and the other is England’s Danny Willett, who is available at around 125/1.

Danny is playing now like he belongs on the tour and can be a serious contender.

His great performance in the World Matchplay a month or so ago will have given him a massive amount of confidence and, barring a blip in the second round of the Irish Open he would have been the winner there in similar conditions to those being faced in America.

With six places on offer, I think he’s a nice each-way bet.
