Sean Scannell is backing Huddersfield Town teammate Nahki Wells to make his mark in the FA Cup this season.

The frontman, who is in line to face Reading in the third round at the John Smith’s Stadium, was a knockout star when former club Bradford City made it all the way to the League Cup final the season before last.

Bermudian ace Wells joined Town for a club-record £1.3m a year ago.

But he was ineligible for the FA Cup having already played for Bradford in the competition.

The 24-year-old, who has already notched a League Cup hat trick (at Chesterfield) for Town, fired in his 10th goal of the term to seal Sunday’s 2-1 Championship win over Bolton Wanderers.

Now Reading are in his sights and Scannell said: “It doesn’t matter whether Nahki starts or comes on from the bench, he’ll always score goals.

“He’s one of the best strikers in the league and he thrives on the kind of service he got against Bolton.”

Town’s tie is one of six all-Championship FA Cup clashes.

And boss Chris Powell, who led Charlton Athletic to last season’s quarter-finals, beating Town along the way, aims to repeat the defeat of Reading achieved by caretaker manager Mark Lillis back in August, when Jacob Butterfield and Harry Bunn sealed a 2-1 success.

Powell is hoping Scannell shrugs off the foot problem he picked up against Bolton.

He’ll also make a fitness check on centre-back Joel Lynch, out for a month with a groin injury.

Reading could hand a long-awaited comeback to Jem Karacan.

The midfielder has missed 15 months of football with a damaged knee.

Royals boss Steve Clarke has also hinted that midfielder Danny Guthrie and striker Jamie Mackie could start after coming off the bench during Sunday’s 2-1 home win over Norwich City.

Loan frontman Glenn Murray, Reading’s joint eight-goal top scorer with Republic of Ireland international Simon Cox, has returned to Crystal Palace.
