A KICK-ABOUT in Greenhead Park has led to the formation of a new football team in Huddersfield.
Escorpions have become affiliated to the West Riding County FA and are aiming to join the Huddersfield District League next season.
The club, who will play matches at Bradley Park recreation ground, are now busily raising funds and have organised a Rock-a-Rave music event at Crow Edge Community Centre (near Holmfirth) on Friday, July 4 and the following day.
Escorpions player-manager Jacob Noble – a former Meltham and Newsome player – explained how the club’s development has snowballed.
“We were originally a group of five lads who met each Monday to enjoy a kick-about in Greenhead Park,” said Noble.
“As we went along, more and more people joined us and we built up a decent squad of players from areas all around Huddersfield.
“We have regularly had 15 and more turning up and when we started talking about things, we all felt we’d like to take it a step further and join a Saturday league.”
West Riding officials have given the green light and an application has gone in to the District League, while Noble and his mates are now trying to raise around £2,000 for equipment, although they’ve already picked up a second hand burgundy kit.
“Our oldest squad member is 23, so we are young and very enthusiastic to get things going and to have a good season,” added Noble, who is a former Huddersfield Minor FA player.
“It’s all about enjoying the game and if anyone would like to join us, they can either come to Greenhead Park on a Monday or a Thursday night, between 7.00 and 9.00, or they can give me a ring.
“We would also like to hear from anyone who could help us out with any spare football equipment.”
Noble’s mother, Deborrah Hoyle, is acting as club secretary and his grandfather, Barrie Noble, will do some coaching. The club can be contacted on 07523 031954.
The event at Crow Edge will feature local bands Mr Shiraz and 3 Ways to Fly, plus several DJs. It’s £20 for a two-day ticket, there will be catering, stalls and camping is included in the price.
