Bolton Wanderers is the latest stop-off point for former Huddersfield Town trialist Shola Ameobi as he seeks a Championship contract.

As well as at PPG Canalside, the 33-year-old Nigeria international and ex-Newcastle United player has also trained at Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday.

Ameobi has been without a club since leaving Crystal Palace in the summer.

He had discussions with Town boss Chris Powell after featuring in a behind-closed-doors game, but no contract was agreed.

Ameobi was capped by England at Under 21 level before making his Nigeria debut in 2012.

He represented the Super Eagles at the 2014 World Cup and in 10 appearances for them, has scored twice.

Ameobi scored 79 goals in 219 starts and 178 substitute outings for Newcastle before leaving in 2014.

He had a brief stint in Turkey before spending the second half of last season at Palace.

Bolton boss Neil Lennon said: “Shola has got a good pedigree and might offer us something a little bit different.

“We’ll take a good look at him and make a decision from there.”
