Chris Powell says he has no issues with fellow former Charlton Athletic manager Jose Riga.

The pair go head to head when Town host Blackpool for the first time since Belgian boss Riga succeeded Powell at The Valley in March.

Riga, whose stay in South-East London lasted only two-and-a-half months (his first game was the goalless draw with Town in March), was made Blackpool manager back on June 11.

Previously in charge of Standard Liege, the 57-year-old was plunged into a difficult situation at Bloomfield Road, and at one stage of pre-season, had just eight contracted players.

While there has been ongoing uncertainty about his future, Riga has remained.

He has brought in a string of new players, and last time out, led his charges to their first win in 11 Championship games and 12 in all competitions.

“I’ve not come across Jose much at all,” said Powell.

“My assistant Alex Dyer remained at Charlton until end of last season, so he knows him.

“There’s certainly no problem between us – we have both left there!

“We have moved on, and we know these situations arise in football.

“Looking from the outside in, there have obviously been some problems there.

“Jose lost his assistant (Bart De Roover) just into the season.

“But he and (coach) Noel Blake have carried on, and done their best to bring some spirit to the club, and they’ve got some results.

“There is always talk about Jose possibly leaving, but he has stuck at it, and all credit to him.”
