TOWN’S League I opening-day opponents Notts County have taken Krystian Pearce on trial.

The 20-year-old former Meadow Lane loanee last week rejected the offer of a Galpharm contract after spending the second half of last season with Town.

Former Birmingham player Pearce, who made just one appearance for Lee Clark’s side, and that as a substitute, has joined up with Notts for training.

New County manager Craig Short is keen to provide competition for existing centre-backs Graeme Lee, Mike Edwards and captain John Thompson.

The Meadow Lane club gave Pearce his senior debut, in their 3-0 FA Cup first-round win over Histon in January 2007, and he played eight further times.

“He did well here when he was on loan,” said Short. “I’ve spoken to his agent and he has come in for us to have a look at him.”

Short, whose side host Town on Saturday, August 7, have already signed Doncaster midfielder John Spicer and Blackpool striker Ben Burgess on two-year deals.

While Pearce aims to seal a deal, reports suggest Championship club Cardiff want to take ex-Town man Danny Drinkwater on loan from Manchester United.

The 20-year-old, who has a year to go on his Old Trafford contract, made 37 Town appearances last season, scoring twice.

The Manchester-born player has yet to make a senior competitive appearance for United.
